The Carbon Busters set off on three exploratory and participatory interventions, as well as a sound performance with carbon spectres from the underground (Francesca Aldegani/ Isabella Forciniti/ Dominika Glogowski/ Anna Vasof). Does the deep geological strata offer a potential reservoir for the sequestration of toxins, or for our future?

#art/sci research week / September 2-6, 2024

What are the ethical and long-term standards of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)? Could CCS result in unrestricted growth in industrial production? What are the potential risks and trade-offs and how are local communities involved in the discussion? These and other questions are being raised, discussed, and mapped during a week-long research on CCS prospects in Austria, as well as other CO2 storage solutions, in dialogue with partners from science and the industry.

The Carbon Busters’ first ceremony invited guests to a collective celebration of experiences and reflective exchange.  What better place to mark a turning point in our relationship with CO2 than the Haus der Laune (House of Whimsy)? The 18th-century building in Laxenburg Palace Park allegorizes the grotesqueness of the inverted world, where reason is faced with irrational desires. Participatory visual, acoustic and somatic rituals featuring #carbon handprint, #soundhelion, #hakoto, and #breathing CO2 were performed during a collective #solarcooking feast to honour the summer solstice of renewal and rebirth.
